Winning Battles

It is a fact that Joshua fought the battle of Jericho some time around 1400 BC. I was not there to see it, but it must have been a glorious battle! Songs have even been written about how the walls came tumbling down. You can read about this famous battle in the book of Joshua, chapters 5 and 6. In these two chapters we find truths that can help us fell the walls of Jericho that we may encounter in our lives

The Lord said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands..." What the Lord told Joshua makes it abundantly clear that any battle we are to win must be accompanied by the heart-felt knowledge that God will do what He said He will do, which is none other than give us the victory. It is a given, before the battle is ever fought, we are the victor in any and all battles. Simply put, God has said it, so it is true. In other words, we must have faith in the Lord and stand on the truth found in the Word of God. Furthermore, it is the Lord God, not you and I, who will make those walls come tumbling down; and it does not matter how big those walls are either. We must not trust in ourselves, but in His Word.

Keep in mind also that the walls came tumbling down after the children of God shouted. We read this in Joshua 6:20, "...when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed...". Here we are putting emphasis on the word "shouted". I can tell you about a couple of other believers who did some shouting and praising of their own. In Acts 16, we read that Paul and Silas had been thrown into jail. Instead of moaning and groaning and feeling sorry for themselves, they trusted the Lord God Almighty. This is how Luke put it, "About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose." Rest assured that Paul and Silas were not whispering or sighing, they were praising their God with all their hearts.

So in summary, to win any battle in our lives we must have faith in the Lord who said that we are the victor in any battle, even before that battle is ever fought. We must also remember to shout to the Lord whether we feel like it or not. Faith does not depend on our feelings. No matter how big and nasting looking the walls seem to be. When we praise our Lord, we are putting our focus on how big our God is, not how big the walls are. We are letting God know, and anybody else who might be listening, that our faith is in Him. The truth is, when God sees our faith, those mountains in our lives have to move.
