The following is an excerpt taken from J. B. Chapman's book entitled Holiness Triumphant. In his chapter on "Holiness in Extroversion", Dr. Chapman wrote this next thought-provoking paragraph.
Evangelist U. E. Harding was in a railway station over in Illinois waiting for a train. An old and broken man entered the station crying newspapers. The voice sounded familiar, and upon inquiry, the evangelist found that this was a man he had once known as being a sincere Christian, a strong preacher, and a successful soul winner. It was not necessary now to ask if he still retained these virtues. So the evangelist asked simply, "How did it happen?" The other replied in a subdued and broken voice, "Oh, it was just a lot of little things." Just a lot of little things, but these things, like the camel's nose pushed through the Arab's tent, made way for bigger things, and here was a ruined life - ruined because he did not heed the warning to make a holy heart his defense.
Dr. Chapman was using this story to bring to bear the words of caution written by the author of Hebrews (chapter 12),...stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us, looking away from all that will distract us and focusing our eyes on Jesus... We must never allow ourselves to forget this important truth regarding little things.
